The painting, Blush is part of a collection of paintings entitled Songs of the Sky. Seen below is my artist’s intent for the series, of which Blush is a principal part.
Songs of the Sky was inspired by a flight I took from Ottawa to Halifax. I was so stunned by the scenery passing me by that I took many photos and even wrote a poem about it. The poem, combined with my large assortment of plane window photos, was the groundwork for the many paintings that would follow. I made many small tests on unstretched gessoed canvas to figure out what should be my approach to surface treatment, and finally settled on a nice oily surface akin to Gerhard Richter’s Clouds. In addition to being a study of clouds, this series has been a challenge for me to push the limits of what paint can do, to best express the light and colours of the sky in a manner that best expresses my own experience.
